James Robertshaw is proud to announce that production of the Motion Series bioclimatic pergolas has begun at our manufacturing facility in England. The Motion, Motion X, and Motion X Plus are now in production, making James Robertshaw one of the very few companies in the country capable of manufacturing bioclimatic pergolas on British soil.

The launch of Motion Series production marks a significant milestone, not just for James Robertshaw, but for the UK outdoor living industry as a whole. Bioclimatic pergolas have rapidly become one of the most sought-after additions to both residential gardens and commercial outdoor spaces, yet until now the overwhelming majority have been designed, engineered, and manufactured overseas before being imported into the UK market.
That changes today. With production now underway at our English facility, the Motion Series becomes one of the only bioclimatic pergolas genuinely made in the UK, by a British manufacturer, to British standards, and with the quality control that only domestic production makes possible. The Motion Series: three models, one standard of excellence
The Motion Series comprises three distinct bioclimatic pergolas, each engineered around a different approach to outdoor climate control, and each carrying the same commitment to performance, durability, and design integrity.
The Motion is the award-winning manual pergola at the heart of the range. Its patented mechanical rotation mechanism, housed within the aluminium posts, allows all louvres to be adjusted simultaneously with a single pull-down handle, delivering smooth, synchronous movement with no motors, no electronics, and no ongoing running costs. It has already earned a Best Design Award, and its combination of intelligent engineering and operational simplicity makes it a compelling choice for both residential and commercial settings.
The Motion X introduces motorised control via a Somfy linear actuator, enabling louvre adjustment at the touch of a button, through a remote handset, or via integration with a smart home system. Silent, precise, and compatible with RTS and IO protocols, the Motion X is designed for customers who want the convenience of automation without any compromise on the clean aesthetic of the structure itself.
The Motion X Plus is the flagship of the range, built around a dual synchronised actuator system and double-wall aluminium louvre panels injected with polyurethane foam for enhanced thermal, acoustic, and wind insulation. Its high-pressure closing function creates a superior weather seal, and extended 120-degree louvre rotation offers finer control over light, shade, and ventilation than any standard bioclimatic system. For luxury residential properties and premium hospitality venues, the Motion X Plus represents the highest level of bioclimatic pergola engineering currently available from a UK manufacturer.
Built for the British outdoor living market
Every Motion pergola is built with the British climate firmly in mind. Robust 120 x 120mm aluminium profiles, integrated hidden drainage channels, and a choice of freestanding, wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted configurations ensure that each installation performs reliably through whatever the British weather delivers, season after season.
Available in four standard sizes, from 3 x 3 metres up to 4 x 5 metres, with the option to link multiple units for larger coverage areas, the Motion Series is as suited to a residential garden terrace as it is to a hotel rooftop or a restaurant’s outdoor dining space. Optional perimeter LED lighting in Warm White or RGBWW extends usability into the evening, and all motorised models are compatible with smart home integration for fully automated weather response.
