External Shading Products
External shading systems are much more efficient than internal ones for controlling heat gain and solar glare – they dissipate the convected solar gain and re-radiated heat back into the outside air. Therefore external solar shading devices will effectively minimise solar heat gain more than their internal solar shading counterparts. Due to the path of the sun and the rotation of the earth, the angle of the sun changes from 14° in winter solstice to 60° in summer solstice. Shading systems must allow for these changing angles.
As an overall value, it could be concluded that the effectiveness is increased by about 30% by using an external shading device instead of an internal one. To provide the most effective protection, retractable and extendable external shading products should be designed as a special requirement to meet the solar geometry of the latitude of the building as well as the orientation of the windows it is covering. Whilst external shading controls heat gain more efficiently, internal shading is designed to control natural light.
