The Closer External Screen is one of the most effective products to manage the amount of solar gain (heat) and solar glare (light) from filtering into a building, significantly reducing the usage of air conditioning units, as well as sealing an external / internal room for weather and light. As well as the important energy saving benefits the Closer produces, it also enhances the buildings façade, protects goods and merchandise, whilst becoming a stylish addition. Depending on the fabric choice, it also filters light and prevents glare, whilst maintaining both visibility and ventilation. The Closer is available in the wide range of Giovanardi fabrics, including both dim out as well as blackout options. The unique aspect about the Closer is the special ‘rod technology’ that holds the fabric inside the lateral guides and holds and supports the material for the entire drop of the blind, as the fabric is raised or lowered. This results in no sun leakage and also creates a barrier that is wind tested to class 3 (UNI EN 13561) corresponding on the Beaufort wind scale to class 6 (wind speed up to 49 Km/h). (more…)

TOPLINE: the strongest folding-arm awnings manufactured in the UK!

The arms of the TOPLINE range of James Robertshaw folding-arm awnings are characterised by their elegant, eye catching design and precision performance. The reliability and durability of a folding-arm awning requires mechanisms of superior quality. All components have been developed to ensure smooth function and high durability whilst proving themselves in very demanding wind and load tests. The use of high quality extruded sections combined with joint parts of high strength die casting (for projections up to 3500mm) and drop forged arm (for projections up to 4500mm) castings stand for optimal safety, even under extreme load. The specially designed and tested ‘multi-flex’ power band, which is made up of four tear resistant steel cables sheathed in a highly flexible plastic arm material protecting against corrosion and damage, guarantees at least 70,000 arm operations. It applies the force of up to 3 x spring movements in the upper arm section and ensures proper tensioning of the awning system.

Safety
All James Robertshaw folding-arm awnings are designed and manufactured in conformity with the provisions of the DIN EN 13561 standard. Nevertheless, through non-observance of the corresponding guides during the operation of the systems, dangers for persons involved or impairment to the product or other items can occur.

Proper Intended Use
All James Robertshaw folding-arm awnings are primarily used to protect against solar irradiation. In addition, they can be limitedly employed as protection against rain.

Wind Limits
Depending on the quality of the product, folding-arm awnings are classified according to DIN EN 13561 Point 4.3 into wind resistant classes. The higher the class, the higher the quality of the product.

The TOPLINE range of James Robertshaw folding-arm awnings are the strongest folding-arm awnings manufactured in the UK achieving wind resistance class 3 (Beaufort 6) even at 4500mm projections. The above video’s demonstrate the Panther system at 7000mm width x 4500mm projection in both wind and rain elements retracting under these conditions.

Bolton based business James Robertshaw manufacture, supply and install window blind systems to commercial and domestic markets. The company is currently introducing a range of automated solar shading products which prevent the sun from overheating a building, and thereby reduce the degree to which energy-hungry air conditioning is required.

Activities Undertaken

  • Quantifictaion of product benefits, plus context
  • Market intelligence
  • Introduction to events and resources in sustainable buildings and retrofitting
  • Development of a product launch strategy

“The Eco Innovation Programme has really helped us to focus on marketing our carbon reducing products. Through the case studies we are able to quantify the savings gained and give credibility to our claims enabling architects, design engineers and facility managers to assess and consider the advantages of our systems”. Lesley Sharrock, Sales Director.

Key Achievements

  • Development of a detailed product launch plan
  • Quantification of the products benefits in terms of energy, carbon footprint and financial savings
  • Advice on how to optimise the benefits

Results

It was shown that the new products could reduce energy demand for air conditioning by as much as 50 to 70% or more, representing financial savings of hundreds of pounds a year, and a carbon footprint reduction of hundreds or even thousands of kg every year. Even in a building where cooling has already been installed, the product could pay for itself in under five years.”

The Future

In conjunction with the Centre for Construction Innovation North West, the company is planning an event to present the product at The Cube, Manchester.
